From Fussy Eater to Food Enthusiast: A Culinary Journey
You might recall from my previous blogs that I wasn't exactly a fan of food as a child. In fact, my parents often struggled to get me to eat! However, a few key encounters and experiences gradually transformed me into a bonafide food lover.
My friendship with Shihab played a significant role in this transformation. His mother's delectable fish curry was a revelation, opening my eyes to the joys of home-cooked meals.
Moving to a new house brought about another culinary awakening. Our new maid, a kind soul whom I considered family, introduced me to a variety of dishes. Her masala dosa, served hot with flavorful chutneys, was a revelation. She also encouraged me to try "Pazham Kanji," a traditional Kerala breakfast. Initially, the smell put me off, but I soon discovered the magic of combining it with onions, chilies, coconut, and curd.
My love for exploring new cuisines blossomed during trips to Thrissur. I would spend hours wandering the streets, searching for hidden culinary gems. The Ming Palace, a Chinese restaurant near Ragam Theater, was a revelation. The elegant ambiance and the use of cutlery introduced me to a whole new dining experience.
Weddings were another significant source of culinary delight. The anticipation of the "Neychorum" (ghee rice) and beef curry, and the aroma of freshly cooked Biryani wafting from the "Biryani Chembu" (pot), always left me salivating.
Food became a source of immense joy. I savored every bite, appreciating the unique flavors and textures. I developed a particular fondness for curd, insisting on it with every lunch, much to the amusement of my friends.
My culinary adventures continued during my college days. Satharinte Kadai, a local eatery famous for its Beef Fry and Porotta, became a regular haunt. I also explored the vibrant street food scene, indulging in local delicacies like "Kappa Erarchi" (tapioca with beef curry) and the legendary Beef Biryani from a renowned local shop.
College life also exposed me to the diverse culinary traditions of my friends from Kannur and Kozhikode. Their passion for food further broadened my culinary horizons.
Despite my growing appreciation for food, I never considered myself a cook. I enjoyed watching cooking shows but never ventured into the kitchen myself.
However, that all changed after I got married to Noufira. My culinary journey took an unexpected turn, leading me down a path I never imagined. I'll share more about my accidental entry into the world of cooking the to Jams Cafe Grills and Restaurant in my next blog post. Stay tuned!
